SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – Marketing in Mass Communication Week for millennials,
can you say that three times fast? School of Journalism and Mass Communication
had the pleasure of hosting Dax Patton from Digital Touch Systems, Inc and the
annual festival and conference, SXSW, to speak at our annual mass communication
week. Patton’s panel was focused towards networking, marketing and continuous
hard work as the ingredients to success.
Patton graduated from
Texas Tech University, but before getting to where he is now he had to put in
the late hours. After college, he had a staffing position in Dallas, Texas, and
then made the move to a sales job in Oklahoma. He was working all types of jobs
to help him fund a company he created with a couple of his pals. Fast forward a
few years, and now his self-funded company, Digital Touch Systems, has clients
like Top Golf, Samsung and SXSW. Patton
described his determination to climb the ladder as him having a “real scrappy
mindset”.
The presentation started
off with encouragement to never stop educating ourselves. The next step of
advice was to build a strong foundation to always have. Patton worked for a
global company right after school which he believes helped him put his foot in
the door.
“Really hustle, you’re
young,” Patton said. He was making a point to emphasize that as fresh graduates
we must put in the hard work to reach our ultimate goals. Some of his advice
tips included doing the ‘handwritten letter thing’ and never forget to throw
the business card in.
His lecture came to close
as he reminded us to go outside of our comfort zones and take risks by reaching
out and networking. “Be aggressive, but be smart,” Patton said. “You never know
who your talking to or who you are next to.”
